Recruitment

Development and evaluation of a computerized morphology training package on English literacy in Hong Kong primary school students with reading comprehension difficulties

POSTED ON - 18 APRIL, 2023

We are currently recruiting local primary schools to use our researcher-developed online English learning platform, Reading Step by Step: Affix.

Reading Step by Step: Affix is funded by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR). The platform focuses on teaching English affixes and reading comprehension, with a total of 13 learning modules. Each module covers 2-4 selected affixes. Students can enjoy self-directed learning during various learning activities on the platform.

What is affix?

Affix knowledge helps us analyze the meaning of unknown words. For example, we already know that the affix un- has the meaning of not. When we encounter a word that starts with un-, even if we never saw the word before, we can still analyze the meaning of it. Unhappy means not happy. We believe, affix knowledge helps enrich students’ vocabulary and hence improves their reading comprehension.

We will organize workshops for participating schools to introduce the platform to school teachers. Teachers will also know how to apply the platform in English lessons and other English learning activities.

Recruitment target: Primary schools in Hong Kong
Online platform target students: Upper primary level
Recruitment period: Feb-May 2023

Reading Step by Step: Affix is now being evaluated in the research phase. The current recruitment is for future public use and does not involve any research purpose.
