POSTED ON - 18 APRIL, 2023

Project Period: October 2021 – September 2023

Project Team: Dr Yeung, Siu Sze Susanna*

* Principal Investigator

Funding: Standing Committee on Language Education and Research

About the Project:

This study develops and evaluates a computerised training package to support students with English reading comprehension difficulties. Reading comprehension is an essential skill for academic success, and morphological awareness training has shown promising effects to enhance this skill for students with reading comprehension difficulties. The Computerised English Morphology Training Package (CEMTP) provides morphological awareness training through the introduction of 16 affixes using direct teaching, interactive games, and reading comprehension practices. Direct feedback is given on students’ performance to support their learning over 12 weeks.

A randomised controlled trial is conducted with local Primary 5 students with reading comprehension difficulties. Students using the training package are compared to peers using a control package on measures of morphological awareness, reading comprehension and other related skills to evaluate the effects of the training package on English literacy outcomes.
